Overview of Canon FD Lenses with Filter Thread Diameter and Lens Hoods

Difference between bayonet versions:

• FD (until 1979): Old breech-lock bayonet. The lens itself is not rotated but fastened to the camera with a silver locking ring.
• New FD (nFD, from 1979): Rotating bayonet. The entire lens is rotated until it locks. It has a square release button at the base.

The lens hood nomenclature:

The designations of the original Canon lens hoods (e.g. BW-52A) follow a simple logical system:

• 1st letter (B): Bayonet mount
• 2nd letter (W/S/T): Wide, Standard, Telephoto
• Number: The filter thread diameter in millimeters (e.g. 52, 55, 72)

Glossary of lens abbreviations:

• S.S.C. = Super Spectra Coating (Modern multi-coating)
• S.C. = Spectra Coating (Basic coating)
• L = Luxury (Contains aspherical lenses or fluorite glass)
• AL = Aspherical Lens
• TS = Tilt/Shift
